Thread: Survive: Escape from Atlantis!:: Rules:: Red tiles at beginning of turn.

The rules state that at the beginning of your turn you "CAN" play a tile from your hand (red outlined tile). They also state that you MUST do all of the actions and in order if you can. Which is it? If I have a red tile that i CAN play, but I would rather wait for better timing, am I allowed to wait or must I play it if possible.

Just want some clarification, don't know why anyone wouldn't want to move a creature, but it came up in a game I played recently.

I understand that normally a swimmer only gets 1 movement a turn and getting on or off a boat and jumping off a tile counts as this movement. But what's never really made clear is if you can use a movement from the red dolphin aid (move your swimmer 3 sea spaces) to hop in a boat once you are in the same tile as a boat.

In the Stronghold 2010 edition of Survive the rules state the following concerning the defensive whale-tile:

"When another player moves a Whale into a sea space occupied by a Boat that you control ..."

But in the 30th Anniversary Edition the rules state:

"When another player moves a Whale into a sea space occupied by one of your Ships ..."

The question is, what is meant by the new wording "your Ship"? I find it a bit ambigous. Is it still referring to a Ship that I control, or is it now referring to any Ship that I have an explorer on? It makes a huge difference as to who is allowed to play the defensive tile. Can only the controller play the tile, or anyone with an explorer on the ship in question?

What do you think? Who can play the tile?
1. Only the controller. (No rules change. The new rules unfortunately used a wording that was less clear than before.)
2. Any player with an explorer on the ship. (Deliberate rules change.)

I recently bought the 30th anniversary edition Survive: Escape from Atlantis, and sadly, the rules and components for Dolphins and Dive Dice are not included.

I found the near-final rulebook for the 2010 edition that includes the rules, but I need to know a few things before I can homebrew it:

1) Exactly which tiles include a Dolphin icon - terrain type and underside.

2) Can I assume that the icon Dive Die is a d6 with one each of symbol (Shark, Dolphin, Whale, Sea Serpent, Boat, Starfish)?

Thanks!

We played that when a tile has a new shark or whale appear, the person who drew it can put the creature wherever they want (in an empty sea space). Halfway through the game I realized the rules said to place it where the tile was, but given how strong the tiles are that go into your hand, I think it's better to at least let a player decide where the new creatures go.

Just to be sure: when you move a creature using a movement tile, you are not constrained by the normal speed of the creature as written on the board (3 spaces max for whale, etc.), correct? The movement tile simply teleports the creature?

Does anyone have a copy of the Parker Brothers rulebook handy?

I just picked up a copy of Survive! at a garage sale. No rulebook inside. (I remember the game vaguely from many years ago but I need a bit of a refresher on the rules.)

Or does the Stronghold version work exactly the same?

Thanks

This question pertains to the 30th Anniversary edition in case the original rules are different.

If the whirlpool wipes out the volcano tile does the game end immediately or do you continue playing until all tiles are removed?

If a boat in the disembarkation hex and an explorer on the boat tries to disembark while there is also a shark in the same hex, will the explorer be eaten?

Or is he "jumping the shark?"

Rules seems to suggest you can sail a manned boat into a whale. Is that correct?

If yes...whales block a safe island harbour...first action I crash my boat into whale...boat destroyed my 2 meeples hit the water. Last 2 actions I escape to safety!

Is that legal?

Is it possible not to move any of your survivors? I found that in the 2p game when I have few scattered survivors in mountain tiles, it would be better to wait until I get some useful defensive tiles or a boat nearby. But then the game gets a bit stuck... So I think I'm doing something wrong.

I have the German Stronghold/Asmodee edition called "The Island". Which I'm not sure if it is the same as the so-called 30th anniversary edition...

Thanks.

Thread: Survive: Escape from Atlantis!:: Rules:: Questions after first play

A few questions came up last night when we played our first game of the 30th Anniversary Editon.

1. When you land a boat on one of the small islands, are the explorers automatically saved or do you have to spend movement to actually move them off the boats?

2. How many tiles can you play from your hand at the beginning of your turn? The rules say "play a tile", not "play one tile" so at one point one of us played two tiles. The again, it does not say "play one or more tiles" either, so what is correct?

3. When you play a tile, do you still get your movements? What I mean is, when we played for instance a red dolphin tile we moved a swimmer three hexes and then was able to move him a fourth hex using one of the three movements. The same thing goes with boats; using a tile can move the boat three hexes and using my movements I can move it three more. That's six hexes! Is that the correct way of playing it?

Thanks in advance!

Thread: Survive: Escape from Atlantis!:: Rules:: Single Player SURVIVE Challenge

Hey everyone,
As soon as SURVIVE was released by Stronghold Games (couple of years ago), I ordered a copy for me and my gaming partner (my daughter). We both liked it very much and played it several times. Unfortunately, as she has grown older, she has very little time for gaming, so I have been forced to focus on single player games. The other day I pulled SURVIVE off of the shelf, just to reminisce and look at the components. I find it to be a colorful, inviting and fun game and I wished I had my gaming partner back. Then I had a thought. Why couldn’t the components and the theme of this game be used to create a single player game? I started thinking of other adventure games and how similar mechanics could possibly be incorporated to create a viable solo-play experience. Alas, being a novice BG’r at best, I hesitate to even attempt such a project, so I thought I might pose the challenge to the experts here at BGG.

So here it is…
The challenge: To create a single player game using some or all (but not limited to) the components of SURVIVE. There could be special hexes, decks of cards, new creatures, treasures, villains…whatever.
The scenario: No limits…I don’t want to hinder the creative forces, although, if I had a choice, I would prefer that the inevitable sinking of the island would still be a part of the game.

Who knows, maybe the creation could wind up becoming an official expansion published by Stronghold Games.

I hope there is interest and I welcome your thoughts.
All the best,
StephenJ

Just finished our first game of Escape from Atlantis and only had one major question. I couldn't find anywhere in the rulebook that explained how each player's initial two boats got onto the board. I'm guessing you place them during the phase when you are placing your Explorers (at least that's how we chose to do it), but I'd like to know the official way to use going forward.

30th anniversary edition. have all three expansions.

1> The rules state "During your game turn, you MUST perform these actions in order: 1. Play a Terrain tile from your "hand" - Once and once per turn only, you MAY play a Terrain tile you've obtained during a previous round." So which is it? must? or may? And have I been playing too many card games? I'm assuming I MAY play a tile, but dont have to - but if I do - I MUST play it as my first action.

2> Reaching a Safe Isle - implies that a swimmer in one of the two adjacent hexes needs to spend another movement to get on the land. Isn't really clear about the people in boats. So I'm assuming that once you get to one of the two hexes touching the island, you need one more movement whether you're in a boat or in the water. Is that right?

3> Dolphins. Rules says if I move a dolphin-protected swimmer with my normal move actions, I can move the dolphin with the swimmer. If someone else rolls a dolphin on the dice, they can move the dolphin away from me, or steal the dolphin for their swimmer in the same hex. But what if I roll the dolphin on the die? Can I move the dolphin and take the swimmer with me? Because of the hex the dolphins replace I would assume so... but it doesn't actual say that anywhere. And I'll also assume that if the dolphin dives, I can't go with it?

I'm making a lot of assumptions and its 3am. so hopefully this makes enough sense for you guys to figure out how to reply

Rules Clarifications : Blue Dices + Squid rules
Just for confirmation and corrections as some things are just confusing me :

1 - We get rid of any red ice ( 1 provided in main game + 1 provided with the dolphin dive expansion) right ?

2 - Dolphin appears on any dolphin icon terrain tile revealed. the tile is immediately discarded. Dolphins protects swimmer fom shark and sea snake attack only -----AND wopn't help him move 3 spaces instead 1 as long as it is on the same sea space YES or NO ?-----,when the swimmer moves netxt time, the dolphin doesn't follow him, it will only if the player role a star symbol or a dolphin symbol and choose the dolphin to move 1 space to stay with him.

3 - when we reveal a whale tile, we can both place a whale on that free sea space AND a squid anywhere on a sea space adjacent to that space. (it kills automatically any adjacent meeple located on a terrain tile or on a boat).

4 - when we roll the blue creature die we have 6 faces : dolphin, shark, sea monster, boat, star (any creature/empty boat), whale (that means squid too, but choose one of the 2). Right ? Then we see the distance with second dice so 1 space, 2 space or 3 spaces, the D meaning any free sea space on the board.

BUT we ONLY roll the distance die for dolphin, boat and squid right ? for the other creatures it is written on the game board.

5- a whale enterring a squid space kills it as well as a squid entering a whale space kills it. ( is it because of suprised attack ? backstabbin' ?) that is strange...

Thread: Survive: Escape from Atlantis!:: Rules:: What happens if you draw a boat tile and there are no boats left?

What happens in the case, which happened in our game last night, when you turn over a tile, a boat is supposed to appear there, and there are no boats in the supply? I'm not sure if this is possible in a 4-player game but it happened in our six-player game (using the six-player expansion) when there were NO spare boats to start with. We weren't sure whether:

(A) You just don't get a boat in this case,
(B) You get to take an empty boat from anywhere else, or
(C) Use some random object to act as an additional boat (similar to what happens in chess when you queen a pawn and you still have your original queen).

Is there an official ruling for this? We opted for (A), because (B) would have disadvanaged another player by removing a useful boat for that player.
