Thread: Survive: Escape from Atlantis!:: Rules:: A few clarifications

Can Sea Serpents/Whales/Sharks move into the two safe isles spaces in each corner?

Can I choose to flip a tile another player occupies?

Can Whales/Sharks/Sea Serpent share spaces?

Once a swimmer shares a space with a boat it still takes another movement action to board the boat correct?

If I am out of explorers to move can I still move boats?

Thank you!

The 30th Anniversary Edition of the game has a single end game condition, not including the Challenges, which is that the game ends when the Volcano tile is flipped.

We just had our first game in which all surviving meeple made it to safety prior to the volcano appearing. It makes sense that at that point the game just finishes.

Does everyone else play like this?
Is there anything else that could be done otherwise (I can't see how)?

Other posts in this forum refer to earlier editions and rulesets that called out that if there are no remaining swimmers, sailors, or explorers then the game is over. I find it odd that given this is the latest edition and that the rulebook has been overhauled to make everything clear, that this seems to be an omission.

Thoughts?

Just picked up this game on sale at Amazon and played it for the first time last night. However, a few questions came up.

1. Who controls the boat if each player has only one meeple on it?

2. If I want to remove my meeple that's in a ship into the water, and not because a whale made me, does my meeple stay in the space occupied by the ship or go to the next adjacent water hex? I know a swimmer can only move one space, so I'm not sure of the answer.

Thanks!

Thread: Survive: Escape from Atlantis!:: Rules:: Sea creature movement RULES CONFLICT

I am a bit confused when it comes to moving the sea creaturs; shark, whale, sea Serpents etc. For my example I will use the shark. The rules state: "If the die result is a Shark, move one of these creatures one or two sea spaces."

But on the board itself there is a small box, which show that sharks may move 0-2 spaces.

So, MUST you move the shark at least one space (as stated in the rules) or can you choose not to move it at all (as stated on the board).

Which one is the right rule to follow?

The rules sate it can be placed anywhere. WE always make the island filling mountain (w./volcano tile), forest and beach in that order. The mountain tiles are always near the Serpent in the middle of the island I find this way the game doesn't end prematurely.

Anyone else play it this way? I think this is the best way or I prefer to not have the Nolan tile active.

Thread: Survive: Escape from Atlantis!:: Rules:: Giant Squid and dolphins rule imbalance corrections (AKA houseruling the tentacles)

Hey guys!
After some plays using the giant squids I found out that the rules were constructed around the lack of "Spawn squid tiles". Because of that the squid became a weapon of mass destruction completely out of control due to his ability to spawn nearly anywhere on the map (current player choice).
I found a way to balance the game incorporating the squids in the mix.

To do so you need both the "dolphin and dive dice" and "giant squid" expansions

1) Replace the tiles with the sea serpent, shark and whale diving movement (teleport) with a squid spawn tile. In order to do that you basically need to mark those tiles with a small squid sticker and you are done. (if you are more into crafting you can craft your own squid tiles).
There are 6 "Dive" tiles. 3 below the sand and 3 below the forest.
there are also 6 spawning tiles for the sharks and the whales. So the balance is perfect.

Why did I choose to replace the "Dive" tiles? because with the dive dice those tiles where redundant. Also the sea serpent dive tile without the dive dice is a gamebreaker.
So replace those tiles and don't cry for the loss.

2) spawning and squid movement:
When you draw the "squid tile" Spawn a squid in the location exactly like the other animals.
To move the squid use the "wild" (star) face of the dive dice as a SQUID face only.
So when the wild face comes up you can move only the squid.

job done for the perfect game balance

DOLPHINS HOUSERULE
before the introduction of the dolphin pawns the dolphin tile was a gamechanger exactly like the sea serpent dive tile, because of the luck of the draw (swimming 3 spaces was a big deal).
With the arrival of the dolphin as a physical pawn on the board a lot of players missed the possibility of swimming so far!

so here is the houserule: While a player is in control of a dolphin he can swim 3 spaces along with it (like it was before with the tile) AND it is protected against other animals.
Don't worry this rule is not a game breaker, because with the dive dice you lose control of the dolphins very often! And there are only 3 of them anyway.

Hope you will find those methods useful!

Bye!!!

I have the 2016 game version and realize that a Swimmer is only allowed 1 sea space per turn. Here's my questions...

Page 5 of the rulebook states that "Moving a Swimmer onto a safe isle from one of the two adjacent sea spaces costs one movement." ...is this considered a 'sea space' movement or 1 of the 3 'regular' movements?

Also, can 3 different Swimmers each move 1 sea space on the same turn and not violate the rule?

I hate that a game can end with a volcano so from now on I either end the game when all meeples are safe or gone or tiles are gone. Can is use both rules at the same time?

Moving my original post on the Dolphins & Dive Mini Extension forum here as this forum gets a lot more traffic...

Just purchased the base game and the dolphin / dive dice expansion, and went through the rules for the first time. One thing I didn't see covered: what happens if you roll the dolphin symbol on the dive die but there is no dolphin on the board? Do you simply ignore the roll and skip this phase, or re-roll the dice? I realize that there are a million variants that have been posted re this expansion, so curious as to what you have found to be the most sensible way to proceed in this circumstance.

We ran into an end-game issue that seemed to spoil the gameplay a bit. This was a two player game but it seems like it could happen with any number of players.

The situation was that one player had no more explorers to move while another still had some explorers to try to recover. This meant the one player could use all three movements every turn to move the empty boats away without any risk or cost to them since they had already retrieved or lost all their explorers. There was then no possibility for the second player to try to move an empty boat to pick up their remaining explorers since the boat would be moved back away again before they could use it. Their only option would be to swim for it.

We decided this was spoiling gameplay and played by a rule where you can no longer control empty boats once you’ve rescued all your remaining explorers. You can of course continue to manipulate the monsters and choose tiles to remove. You can also keep a survivor right on the edge of an island and still move the empty boats to interfere with the other player(s) because you’re risking that the volcano will erupt before you can save your last explorer.

Thoughts? Is there a rule clarification that addresses this situation?

The rules only adresses pulling out an explorer from land or from a boat, so I get confused: do squids remove swimmers on the same tile?

Thread: Survive: Escape from Atlantis!:: Rules:: Arranging your explorers so you always know their value: allowed, or not?

Help me settle a debate. In a recent game, the winning player said that, throughout the entire game, they'd been secretly keeping their explorers arranged in a certain way as they moved them around, so that the angle of each explorer on its tile always indicated to the player what its value (1 to 6) was.

I can't find this strategy mentioned anywhere on the forum, but it's entirely feasible given the explorer tokens aren't circular. So: is it a legitimate strategy to have a system like this that helps you keep track of where your valuable explorers are at any time? Or is the game's intention that you should go on memory, and memory alone, once you've initially placed them?

Interested to know what people think!

Played last night for the first time since the 1990s. Had a bunch of questions come up.

1. Can a boat move into a hex with a sea serpent? The rules only say a boat is sunk when a sea serpent moves. And if you're in the same square, it must move away. Thus you're safe.

2. Deal the pieces out randomly? Such that beaches can be isolated inland? And mountains on the coast?

3. Move one of your boats during your turn...If you have no people on the board, can you still do this?

4. Can you move a whale into a unoccupied boat? If so does it immediately sink when someone gets on it?

5. Dolphin takes one of your swimmers 3 spaces, can that go on a boat? And then move the boat?

6. Dolphin takes one of your swimmers 3 spaces, can you swim through a shark space? Or a serpent space? The rules only say swimmers die during an attack, which happens when the piece moves.

7. Can you take a boat into a whale or a serpent? Deliberately? Does it sink?

8. Dolphin takes one of your swimmers 3 spaces, is one of those spaces the islands on the side of the board? Or only water spaces?

Played first game last night.

First two players were tied for points.

We weren't sure how to break ties so we checked who had rescued the most people..... but that was also tied!

Is there an official tie break?

Thanks

by robertnhill

Hi everyone

Say a player he no more meeples left (either because they’ve been taken out by monsters or they’ve saved them all).

In the instructions, it says that someone who has no more meeples should skip over Step 2 (move meeple or a boat you control).

My friend had no more people. But on their turn, they kept moving an unoccupied boat around the board (3 spaces). I was trying to get the boat to my people on the board (still on an island piece) but they kept moving it away from me whenever it was their turn.

This was frustrating because I was trying to get my people to shore.

Is this allowed ? Can someone please clarify the rules.

Thanks!

Thread: Survive: Escape from Atlantis!:: Rules:: Boat movement vs swimmer movement

My BF and I are arguing this rule loophole and need some help settling the argument. The rules state that swimmers may only move one hex and therefore can swim one movement to a boat but must wait for the next turn to board the boat. He is arguing that within 1 turn, a boat within his control can be moved 1-2 spaces to a hex with a swimmer and then the swimmer may board the boat with the 3rd movement. Basically, he wants to move the boat to the swimmer in lieu of moving the swimmer to the boat. I feel like this is a loophole but I see his point. Is this permissible?

Hi...Ordered the game primarily to play with my eight year old nieces/nephew...but as I just purchased the game did a run through with my family. During the course of play we ended up with 2 questions. We have the 30th anniversary edition as well the the3 in one expansion set. Using only the dolphins on this run...I was sadly outvoted when it came to using the squids

Ok...so the questions...when using the dive dice....when it comes up a dolphin and you have a dolphin protecting a swimmer...can you use that roll of the dolphin to move the swimmer as well (assuming it is your swimmer) I know you can move the dolphin AWAY from the swimmer...but if is YOUR turn and YOUR swimmer...can they BOTH move?

Secondly....when swimmers enter and exit a boat I know it counts as a movement but is only ever one? Does the meeples position count? For example you have a meeple in the back of a boat that enters the safe island. Is it just one movement for him to exit safely or is it three movements. We were counting it takes two points of movement to move that meeeple to the front of the boat and one point of movement to exit the boat. And used the same when entering, one meeple is entering a boat already occupied by two other meeples and only the center space is open...so takes one movement to enter the boat and one to move to center seat...my family thinks that is incorrect though so here I am asking
