Hey guys!
After some plays using the giant squids I found out that the rules were constructed around the lack of "Spawn squid tiles". Because of that the squid became a weapon of mass destruction completely out of control due to his ability to spawn nearly anywhere on the map (current player choice).
I found a way to balance the game incorporating the squids in the mix.
To do so you need both the "dolphin and dive dice" and "giant squid" expansions
1) Replace the tiles with the sea serpent, shark and whale diving movement (teleport) with a squid spawn tile. In order to do that you basically need to mark those tiles with a small squid sticker and you are done. (if you are more into crafting you can craft your own squid tiles).
There are 6 "Dive" tiles. 3 below the sand and 3 below the forest.
there are also 6 spawning tiles for the sharks and the whales. So the balance is perfect.
Why did I choose to replace the "Dive" tiles? because with the dive dice those tiles where redundant. Also the sea serpent dive tile without the dive dice is a gamebreaker.
So replace those tiles and don't cry for the loss.
2) spawning and squid movement:
When you draw the "squid tile" Spawn a squid in the location exactly like the other animals.
To move the squid use the "wild" (star) face of the dive dice as a SQUID face only.
So when the wild face comes up you can move only the squid.
job done for the perfect game balance
DOLPHINS HOUSERULE
before the introduction of the dolphin pawns the dolphin tile was a gamechanger exactly like the sea serpent dive tile, because of the luck of the draw (swimming 3 spaces was a big deal).
With the arrival of the dolphin as a physical pawn on the board a lot of players missed the possibility of swimming so far!
so here is the houserule: While a player is in control of a dolphin he can swim 3 spaces along with it (like it was before with the tile) AND it is protected against other animals.
Don't worry this rule is not a game breaker, because with the dive dice you lose control of the dolphins very often! And there are only 3 of them anyway.
Hope you will find those methods useful!
Bye!!!
